About Bangkok

Bangkok, the capital of Thailand is one of the world’s biggest city, with an area of 1,500 square kilometres, more the ten million people and over 30,000 taxis circulating in this urban jungle. What was once only a small trading village became Siam capital in 1782.  In the following 200 years it quickly became Thailand’s spiritual, cultural, political, commercial, educational and diplomatic centre.  The city itself is split  up into 50 districts with some more popular than others.  Some of the most known district include Rattanakosin home to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, Khao San Road the backpacker Mecca, Yaowarat Chinatown,  Pahurat Indian community, Dusit the political centre of Thailand, the area around Siam Square the city modern commercial core, Sukhumvit filled with quality hotels and clubs and Silom the financial centre by day turning party district by night.

Grand Palace

The Grand Palace is a very large in size collection of astonishingly decorated temples and other holy monuments, with the most famous being Wat Phra Kaew the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and perhaps one of the most sacred in Thailand.

Wat Pho

Wat Pho also called the Temple of the Reclining Buddha and located near the Grand Palace is home to the world’s largest reclining Buddha image and a famous massage school.

Wat Arun

Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn is located on the other side of the Chao Phraya river from the Grand Palace.  The main structure is 70 meters high and surrounded by four smaller prangs, all decorated with colourful Chinese porcelain pieces.

Khao San Road

Khao San Road located on the north of the Royal city is the backpacker Mecca as it offers many cheap accommodation and plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from, not to mention its vibrant nightlife.

Wat Bowonniwet

Wat Bowonniwet is a major Buddhist temple in the Phra Nakhon district, in the heart of Bangkok.

Lumpini Park

On the central east of the City is located Lumpini Park, Bangkok’s Central Park, a lovely place to escape from all the hustling of the city.

Sukhumvit

The Sukhumvit district with its long Sukhumvit Road is  located on the east of Central Bangkok.  It is not were the main sights are located but more a business area with many sky scrapers (and still building).  It is said to be popular among expatriates especially middle easterners. It is filled with quality hotels, restaurants and nightclubs and perhaps represent Bangkok’s naughty image with Soi Cowboy and Nana Entertainment Plaza.

Patpong

Patpong is the naughty district of Bangkok  and perhaps one of the most known red light district in the world offering a multitude of go-go bars to choose from.

Chinatown

Bangkok‘s  Chinatown also called Yaowarat remains us of the important commercial role the chineese  played over the last 200 years. This neighbourhood is packed with many Chineese restaurants, medicine shops and other street market.

Dusit

The Dusit is the political centre of Thailand and home to the Dusit Park and Dusit Zoo.

Erewan Shrine

Located in the central shopping district, on the cross road of Rama 1 and Ratchadamri, the Erewan Shrine is a religious landmark that locals believe that brings luck and prosperity.

Big Buddha

The Big Buddha located in the central north of Bangkok is a grandiose 320meters tall standing Buddha that can be viewed from far away.

Ananta Samakhom throne hall

The Ananta Samakhom build in a Italian Renaissance and Neo Classic style, is the former reception hall within the Dusit Palace and now serves as a museum.

Wat Benchamabophit

The Wat Benchamabophit also known as the Marble temples is one of the most beautiful attraction in the Dusit district, attracting Buddhist as well as international tourists.
