9e: Les Trois Poussins Hotel
The 'Hotel of the Three Chicks' is a lovely property due south of Place Pigalle. It has 40 rooms, half of which are small studios with their own cooking facilities. There's air-con throughout and one room has wheelchair access. This place reeks of class and style; OK, so we're suckers for classical music and that's what greets you in the lobby on arrival. Take the steel-coloured, almost artistically designed lift up to the guestrooms and be soothed by the peach and flash colour scheme of the halls and the restful views over Paris (especially the panoramic ones from the 5th and 6th floor) or down onto the back patio. The patio is a great spot in the warmer months for breakfast or a drink. The vaulted breakfast room in the cellar may be devoid of light but it is so warm and inviting that this potential shortcoming is instantly forgotten.

11e: Hotel Beaumarchais
The hotel bills itself as a 'veritable ode to the sun' and there's no doubt that all those primary colours and clean lines will put guests in a good mood; even the key holders are bold chunks of red, orange, yellow, blue and green plastic. Guestrooms are of a decent size and most of the doubles have a choice of tub or shower in the bathroom. La crème de la crème are room Nos 2 and 3, a triple and a double entered from the hotel's charming leafy terraced courtyard, where breakfast is served in fine weather. The hotel is air-conditioned throughout.

5e: Hotel la Demeure
The hotel might seem a bit out of the action at the very bottom of the 5e. But the refined rooms, the almost 'clubby' public areas in warm tones of red and orange and the wraparound balconies of the corner rooms make it worth going the extra distance. Famed for those extra touches, the hotel has put iPods in it its suites and installed a modern red fireplace in the lobby that actually works. Colour schemes in the rooms vary - from silvery blue and gray to beige and tan. All doubles contain a queen-size bed while there suites have king-size ones.

4e: Hotel De Nice
Every square centimetre of wall space is used to display old prints, covers of Petit Journal magazine and the odd 19th-century painting. Both the public areas and the guestrooms are full of Second Empire-style furniture, their parquet floors covered with kilims and Indian carpets. There are balconies off guestrooms on three of the five floors, some of them quite long, but the best to our mind are the tiny ones on the top mansard floor from which you can see Notre Dame, the Tour Montparnasse, Hôtel de Ville and the Centre Pompidou.
